pine cone in the hot water and leave it for 20 minutes. The cone scales... This happens in cold water too, but the reason is all about the moisture. Remember, pine cones store a tree's seeds and they want to spread those far and wide. So when it's cold and rainy, they don't want to release them, so the pine cone shuts up. But when it's dry and warm, it opens up to release. And the way this happens is that those pine cone scales absorb water, but they're made up of two different types of material. One absorbs more more than the other. So when the one absorbs more, it actually causes it to then bend around and either open or close. Super cool.
